GREAT COMMISSION’S HISTORY

Great Commission Baptist Church was organized under the leadership of Al Bufkin (senior Pastor), Stanly Carter (Associate Pastor) and Henry Wells (Associate Pastor). Together, these three Ministers of the Gospel met in the basement of Pastor Bufkin home to pray about the formation of Great Commission Baptist Church.

The first Church service was held on January 21, 1990 in a small room inside of what was formally known as the United Ministries Center located on Southfield Road in Detroit. A core group of 28 faithful and committed people formed the church. The focus for the first year of ministry was to establish a Sunday morning worship service and mid- week Bible study. Because of the growing number of young families joining the church, a children’s ministry was also started during the first year.

The church continued to meet in the room of the Urban Ministries Center for one year until the room could no longer accommodate the growing membership. The church then relocated in 1991 to the Youth for Christ building, which was located on West Eight Mile and Telegraph. In 1993, Great Commission relocated to their current location at 19250 Riverview into a building which was purchased after leasing for three years, God has richly blessed Great Commission Baptist Church spiritually over the past 20 years.

The church was welcomed into the Michigan District of the Baptist General Conference on August 1, 1992. In addition to Sunday morning and Wednesday evening Christian Family Night services, the following ministries has also been established Christian Education Ministry, Evangelism Outreach Ministry, Young Conquerors Teen Ministry, Women’s Ministry and Men’s Ministry. We also have conducted numerous Vacation Bible Schools, brining many children and youth to Christ.

Under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Al Bufkin two young men started their preaching ministry (Delano McCrory and Charles Wilson). Also, another one of the ministers on staff, (Gerald Ellis) who has since went home to be with Lord, was ordained and planted a new church as the Senior Pastor of New Creation Baptist Church.

Great Commission is blessed to have collaborated in ministry over the years with Wellspring Youth Development Center, where Dan & Cherie Bandrowski are founders and co-directors. We have also partnered in ministry with Hartford Head Start, New Creations Community Outreach, Prison Fellowship, DARTS Block Club, and the Institute for Black Family Development.
